TriOrb Secures $1.3M in Series A Funding, Bringing Total to $2.9M

On December 28, 2023, TriOrb successfully raised $1.3M in its Series A funding round through a third-party allocation of shares.

The investment was led by The University of Tokyo Edge Capital Partners (UTEC), MIRAI SOUZOU, and DRONE FUND. Alongside this funding, Mr. Noriaki Sakamoto, Partner and COO at UTEC, was appointed as an external director. With this round, our total fundraising to date reaches $2.9M. The funds will be used to accelerate research and development and strengthen our organizational structure.

Founded in February 2023, TriOrb has developed TriOrb BASE, an omnidirectional mobility platform based on the spherical drive mechanism invented at Kyushu Institute of Technology, incorporating research outcomes from the National Institute of Advanced Industrial Science and Technology (AIST). Our platform aims to solve key industrial challenges by enabling flexible transport systems that can collaboratively move long and heavy items, much like land-based drones.

About TriOrb BASE

TriOrb BASE is a high-performance mobility platform designed for a wide variety of robots and AMRs, significantly improving efficiency and productivity in manufacturing environments. Compact yet powerful, TriOrb BASE delivers precise, millimeter-level omnidirectional movement and excels in navigating rough surfaces, narrow spaces, and obstacles such as grooves (60mm), steps (15mm), and slopes (1/6 gradient), while supporting loads of over 300kg. Its simple structure ensures ease of maintenance, making it ideal for harsh manufacturing environments. For more details, please visit our website.

In December 2023, we also launched a new version of our autonomous mobility software, which was developed entirely in-house. The software is highly customizable and compatible with ROS2, allowing customers to adapt it to various use cases. By utilizing intermediate data, users can further customize the system for their specific applications, enabling flexible robotic solutions tailored to their operational needs.

Comments from External Directors and Investors

Noriaki Sakamoto, Partner/Managing Director, COO and Board Director, UTEC:

“TriOrb is set to expand its business significantly, leveraging its strong, simple patents. I see great potential for the platform not only in AGV applications but also as a broader mobility solution. I look forward to UTEC’s continued collaboration with TriOrb as they take on these ambitious challenges. Meeting the team in Kitakyushu and understanding their deep commitment to industry-government-academia collaboration makes this even more exciting.”

Ryohei Takahashi, Executive Officer/Partner, MIRAI SOUZOU:

“It’s a great honor to work alongside UTEC and DRONE FUND, two professionals who have been pivotal in supporting the growth of robotics startups. TriOrb’s founding team has consistently exceeded my expectations with their rapid business expansion. CEO Ishida and COO Shimano, along with their exceptional team, continue to attract top talent and investors. I look forward to contributing to TriOrb’s success as part of the All TriOrb family, helping drive industrial innovation.”

Soki Ohmae, Co-Founder and Managing Partner, DRONE FUND:

“At DRONE FUND, we are committed to promoting the implementation of autonomous robots across land, sea, and air as we work towards realizing a drone and air mobility society. TriOrb’s omnidirectional drive technology enables AGV implementation in manufacturing and construction sites where it was previously difficult, offering solutions to labor shortages and increasing operational efficiency. We were impressed by TriOrb’s technical strengths and ability to rapidly develop products in response to customer needs. We look forward to supporting their growth and fostering synergies between DRONE FUND portfolio companies and LP investors.”

Shuichi Ishida, CEO of TriOrb:

“At TriOrb, our mission is to solve bottlenecks in manufacturing through our omnidirectional autonomous mobility platform. This funding will allow us to enhance the performance of our platform and accelerate our efforts to create new value through collaborative operations involving multiple robots. With the support of UTEC and DRONE FUND, in addition to our existing partner, MIRAI SOUZOU, we have strengthened our capital foundation. The appointment of Mr. Sakamoto from UTEC as an external director further bolsters our management team. We are committed to driving innovation in the manufacturing industry through the deployment of the first omnidirectional autonomous mobility platform in the sector.”
